Well, for the first time in a while I had the time to watch something that was oredered in netflix. To my happy surprise, it was the fourth season of Black Adder "Black Adder goes forth" (hehe, it's clever). It's set in the trenches of World War I. To my surprise I was actually moved by this season. And I think I have to say that the fourth season is the best of all of them.
As the other seasons it thrives on its historical satire and Adder's over-the-top derisions of Baldric. Hugh Lorie continue to amazes me with his spasmodic comedy. I see him now as the gruff main character in that show House... man, he's so much different than he started.
The plots give such a thorough account of the futility of the first World War, which many people aren't really familiar with. One plot shows the stupidity of the army legal system having Black Adder sentenced for killing a messenger pidgeon. Another plot shows Black Adder having to increase the morale of the troups by makig a show using the cheap antics of Charlie Chaplin. All throughout, the Generals keep trying to make a final push and Black Adder devises ways of getting out of it since it would mean horrible senseless slaughter. It's all a laugh, but a truly dark one when a person considers the terrible massacre that WWI was.
The last episode breaks with the other episodes including those of the other seasons. I'd almost say that one would have to watch every episode before (which I now have), to really get it. I felt my heart sink at the end. It's still hanging low now.
Everyone should watch this series. I put it as the top of all the British comedies, and that says alot for anyone who watches them.
